Founded by Swami A. Parthasarathy in 1988, the Vedanta Academy is a world resource for the study, research and dissemination of the ancient indian philosophy of Vedanta. The Academy offers continual three-year full-time residential courses on Vedanta for students from all over the world. Also youth camps for students and retreats for professionals and businesspersons. The Academy disseminates knowledge through a scientific programme of study and reflection. Encourages a spirit of enquiry. A liberal approach that enables the development of the intellect and not merely providing intelligence on a subject.

The full-time three-year Residential Course is open to all students. The curriculum, composed and conducted by Swami A.Parthasarathy, includes in-depth analysis of a range of texts expounding Vedanta Philosophy. The study is complemented by select works from English literature and poetry. The course also includes a module for training students in Sanskrit language and verses. On completion, graduates are awarded a diploma in Vedantic Philosophy.

Three-year course at the Vedanta Academy

Students between 18 and 30 years are eligible to apply for the three-year course. Matriculation and a basic knowledge of English is required. 

Location & Facilities

The Academy is located 108 km southeast of Mumbai, India nestled in the serene hills of Malavli. The secluded setting provides an ideal atmosphere for contemplation on the truths of life. The Academy facilities comprise separate residential units for young men and women enrolled in the three-year course. For guests and retreat participants, there are 90 two bedded rooms. The campus houses three state of the art lecture halls, two yoga studios, gym, jogging track, cricket and soccer grounds, along with basketball, volleyball and badminton courts.

Daily Schedule

The Academy schedule runs from 4:15 am to 9:00 pm. It harnesses the different aspects of the student’s personality for self-development. The day begins with an hour and a quarter of individual study and reflection. Followed by a structured yoga session and jogging, supplemented by gymnastics and sports. Providing an hour of physical exercise. 

With no weekends and vacations, every single day courses through individual study, physical exercise, lectures by Swami A.Parthasarathy, campus work, Sanskrit lessons, group discussions, audio-visual presentations and community singing. 

The schedule is designed to maintain the traditional spiritual disciplines of karma action, bhakti devotion, and jnana knowledge.

Rational thinkers, who are keen to listen and learn to improve their quality of life. Who are prepared to put aside cell phones during lectures and activities, try new food, challenge old ideas and follow a schedule of early nights and early mornings. Willing to taste the satisfaction that arises from learning higher values and addressing the realities of life.

Guests are required to abstain from consuming non-vegetarian food, alcohol and cigarettes on campus. Confine use of mobile phones to rooms.

How to get there

To stay at the Academy you need prior permission and a confirmed booking. There are three modes of transport to reach us.

Road: On the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, take the Lonavala/Karla exit. Consult the map.

Train:
Mumbai to Academy
From CST Station in Mumbai, board a Pune-bound train and alight at Lonavala station. At Lonavala, board the Pune-bound local train and alight at Malavli station. Malavli is the first stop from Lonavala approximately 10 minutes away.

Pune to Academy:
Take the Lonavala-bound local train from Pune station to Malavli station. Malavli is one stop before Lonavala. The journey takes a little over an hour.

The Academy is funded by the Vedanta Cultural Foundation, a public charitable trust registered under the Bombay Public Trusts Act. The Foundation welcomes donors to donate towards student and research scholarships for the three-year course. The students are provided with room and board, tuition, books, stationery, toiletries and minor medical facilities. A patron may donate in full or in three annual instalments. The donations enjoy tax exemption in India.
